Questions to ask during the externship
During the Externship…Be Professional!
Before you start your externship, here are some questions to ask to your sponsor:
- What time should I arrive?
- To whom will I be reporting?
- Do I need a parking permit/photo ID/etc. to enter the workplace?
- Is there any additional paperwork that you need from me?
- What is the dress code?
- It’s always best to be overdressed rather than underdressed. Wear a suit if you have one, or slacks, a button down shirt and a tie.
- Is there anything I can do to prepare (e.g., review website or read any other materials they suggest)
Questions to ask during the externship
- What are different entry-level jobs in this career field?
- What do you do on a typical day?
- What background or experience is required or helpful?
- What aspects of this career field do you like and dislike?
- What courses might be helpful for me to take to enhance my chances for employment in the field?
- How competitive is the job market?
- What are the salary ranges at the entry-level and higher levels?
- What is the typical career progression in the field?
- What related fields are available for people with backgrounds such as yours?
- What is the future in the field in terms of new and expanding opportunities?
- What would you suggest for someone who is just beginning in the field?
- What other organizations or people in this field would you suggest I talk with?
- Are there resource books, articles, or professional organizations that you would suggest I use?
During the Externship…Be Professional!
- Dress appropriately for the externship; ask if unsure
- Be punctual; arrive early and stay until the end of the workday
- Show respect
- Use formal mode of address until told otherwise (Mr., Ms, Dr.)
- Shake hands when meeting/greeting someone (if sitting, stand up)
- Knock before entering an office
- Give your full attention to employees in sponsor’s office
- Have a positive attitude and show enthusiasm
- Absorb information
- Gradually take initiative and volunteer
- Turn cell phone off and do not use technology for personal reasons
- Get business cards from everyone you meet
- Send a handwritten thank you note regardless of how you think the externship went or your interest in being part of the organization. This can make a huge difference in the hiring/selection process.
- Keep in touch with your host and people you met during your time at the company. Ask your host if you can contact them in the future with questions. This simple question may ease any feelings of awkwardness when you contact them in the future, since the host has already previously agreed to correspond with you.
